Split is the second-largest city of Croatia, lying on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and being an important transport hub and popular tourist destination. Founded in the 2 nd or 3 rd century BC, it was the site of the Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. The historic center of Split was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. The city is famous for its architecture, museums, popular music, sports and Mediterranean food.


HOW TO ARRIVE TO SPLIT

You can travel by plane, boat, bus, train or car. There are not that many direct flights to Split running all year round, but flight connections from several European cities are quite plentiful during April to October. Other airports: Zadar (160 km, regular bus service to Split) and Zagreb (400 km, regular train, bus and flight service to Split).


Split Airport Saint Jerome is after Zagreb Airport the most important in Croatia. The airport is c. 25 km west of Split. Airport website: www.split-airport.hr


Public Transport Lines # 37 (Split – Trogir – Split) and # (Split Airport – Kastel Stari – Split – Kastel Stari – Split Airport). Further information: www.promet-split.hr. These local buses operate along the road outside of the terminal – you need to walk through the parking lot and cross the road to the bus stop on the other side of the road.

By bus The bus station of Split is in the very center of city, right next to city harbor and railway station. There are regular bus lines to and from Munich and Trieste. Most other bus lines involve a change in Zagreb. There are many buses to and from Zagreb every day. The journey takes 5 to 7 hours. By train Split train station is right in the city center, a few minutes walk from the port and the old town. It is possible to travel by train to Split, however most routes involve a change of train at Zagreb. Information here Croatian Railways website www.hznet.hr
