Helge Tallqvist

I got inspired to play harmonica for real in 1982 when I spent 3 weeks in Los Angeles with my friends. We were invited by the great George “Harmonica” Smith who took us around the blues clubs in LA. I made friends also with such harmonica players as William “Bill” Clarke, Rod Piazza, Mark Hummel, Rick Estrin… etc.

Since then, I have made several CDs with my bands and for over ten years I have had young talented ladies on vocal in my band, Helge Tallqvist Band, and made cd’s with all of them (5 ladies). They found the blues and has made their own career within Blues and soul. Now I have the young Unna Kortehisto on vocal, made a cd and we represented Finland in 2026 in the European Blues Challenge in Katowice (Unna with Helge Tallqvist Band) I’m so happy that all these youngsters found this music genre. With Unna we continue and aim for festivals in Europe and US.

I thank The European Blues Union for inducting me at The European Blues Hall Of Fame. This is a great honor for me and gives me strength to carry on playing The Blues, the music I love”.

Helge Tallqvist, Finland’s Harmonica Keeper of the Blues Flame.

In the northern chill of Helsinki, where winter winds cut sharp and nights stretch long, you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find one of Europe’s warmest, most soulful harmonica voices. Yet this is exactly where Helge Tallqvist, born in 1952, shaped a career that would make him a cornerstone of the Scandinavian blues scene -a musician whose tone carries both the grit of Chicago’s South Side and the melancholy of Nordic skies.

Tallqvist didn’t grow up as a prodigy. In fact, as a teenager, he was told he wasn’t particularly musical. But the blues has a way of finding its people. His older brother’s record collection, featuring John Mayall, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown or Jimi Hendrix, opened the door. A live concert by the Bluesbreakers in Helsinki blew it wide open.

Self-taught and stubbornly dedicated, he began shaping his sound on the harmonica, guided by the encouragement of Finnish blues icon Pepe Ahlqvist.

Everything changed in 1982. Tallqvist traveled to Los Angeles and San Francisco, where he met giants of the West Coast harmonica tradition like George “Harmonica” Smith, William Clarke, Rod Piazza, Shakey Jake or Rick Estrin.

Three weeks in the heart of the blues transformed him. He returned to Finland with a mission: he would become a professional blues musician. Decades later, his tribute album “Plays George “Harmonica” Smith” stands as a testament to that formative pilgrimage.

Tallqvist’s recording career began in 1984, and his first solo album, “Hitsville Hop”, arrived in 1995. Over the years, he has built a catalogue that blends tradition, swing, and modern soul-blues textures. Each album reveals a musician who honors the past while nurturing the future.

The Helge Tallqvist Band has become a creative home for some of Finland’s most compelling female vocalists. Tallqvist’s instinct for pairing his harmonica with powerful voices has helped spotlight artists such as Ina Forsman, Emilia Sisco, and Charlotta Curves. Tallqvist’s band is more than a backing group: it’s a blues incubator.

With performances in a dozen countries, including the United States, Tallqvist has become one of Europe’s most respected harmonica ambassadors. His playing -warm, expressive, and steeped in the legacies of Little Walter and George Smith- is instantly recognizable.

He often says he expresses emotions through his harmonica that he can’t always voice otherwise. That vulnerability, that honesty, is what makes his sound resonate.

Before dedicating himself fully to music, Tallqvist built a career in advertising as a media planner, after studying economics at the Svenska Handelshögskolan. But the blues kept calling, and eventually, it won.
